Government The new coalition government! There are many areas of policy that they are pursuing that trouble me at least they are tackling the fact that for years we have lived well beyond our means. I do not think that the coalition will run its full term due to the in fighting and the inability that theMPs that were elected have failed to keep their promises The expenses scandal has changed the face of politics in the UK and it is tempting to look to the future in a very positive way, but, as yet we are in danger of sleep walking into a "Business as usual" type mentality which will help no-one. With regard to the previous government........ Loosing discs with our data on, taking donations from the wrong people, taking us into a possibly illegal war, Giving Northern Rock more money than we spend on primary education, nearly calling an election (but not quite), The other parties doing not much more than make very silly sound-bite statements. I am not very impressed, are you ? There is still hope though
! The way democracy works in the UK is as follows:
Parliament can make law about anything.
No Parliament can bind a future parliament (that is, it cannot pass a law that
cannot be changed or reversed by a future Parliament). An Act of Parliament cannot be overridden by the courts, the courts interpret the law they do not create the law.
Parliament is our supreme law maker and this cannot be changed UK membership of the EU was enabled by Acts of Parliament - principally the European Communities Act 1972 therefore a future Parliament could, as a matter of UK law, pass legislation to withdraw the UK from the EU, or selectively bar and change bits of European law within the UK.
